This frosted and clear souvenir glass from the 116th. Kentucky Derby race at Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky held on May 5, 1990 is marked: 1990 / Churchill Downs Inc. / Official Harry M. Stevens Inc.

The first Kentucky Derby was held on May 17, 1875, at the Louisville Jockey Club track (later renamed Churchill Downs). The Derby was originally shepherded by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr.. He was the grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and grandnephew of the city's founder George Rogers Clark. Horse racing had a strong tradition in Kentucky, whose Inner Bluegrass Region had been a center of breeding high quality livestock throughout the 19th century. Ten thousand spectators watched the first Derby, where Aristides won.

By the early 1900s, owners of winning Kentucky Derby horses started sending their winners to run in the Preakness Stakes in Maryland and the Belmont Stakes in New York. In 1930, sportswriter Charles Hatton coined the term Triple Crown in reference to the same horses running the three races consecutively.

In very good + condition without chips, cracks or fleabites it measures 5 1/4 inches tall, 2 3/4 inches across the rim and 2 1/4 inches across the base.

An addition to any Horse Racing Souvenir Collection.

SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. If you have questions feel free to contact me and thank you for looking.

 Condition:

 GOOD

In overall good condition. Antique and vintage items by their very nature show normal wear to finish and miscellaneous scratches, nicks, and dings due to age and use. As we define 'good condition' relative to the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include nicks or dings to a wooden, metal, enamel, or chalkware object, wear to a painted surface, speckling on a mirror, crazing, wear to gilding, or manufacturing glaze skips in ceramic finish, wear to a label, and some original decorative trim may be missing. If ceramic/porcelain restoration has been done, it is of museum-quality so that it is hardly discernible and would be specifically mentioned in the listing. 'Good condition' could include very small fleabite chips or very small hairline cracks in any glass, ceramic, or marble item, but these would be specifically mentioned in the listing.

 Item Specifics:

The base has a small hole punched in one side.

 Subject:

JESUS CHRIST

Jesus of Nazareth (2 BC - 36 AD), also known as Jesus Christ, is the central figure of Christianity and is revered by most Christian churches as the Son of God and the incarnation of God. The principal sources of information regarding the life of Jesus and His teachings are the four canonical gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) in the New Testament. Biblical scholars agree Jesus was a Galilean Jew, who was regarded as a teacher and healer. He was baptized by John the Baptist and crucified in Jerusalem under the order of Pontius Pilate. Christian views of Jesus center on the belief that he is divine, is the Messiah whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament, and that he was resurrected after his crucifixion. His mother was the Virgin Mary, also known as Our Lady or the Madonna.

 VELVET/VELOUR

Velvet is a soft pile fabric that has been manufactured for almost 4,000 years. It can be made from any type of thread, although traditionally velvet was made with silk thread leading to its high cost. Velour, velveteen and corduroy are more inexpensive versions of velvet using cotton and synthetic fibers. EuroLux Antiques uses the term velvet/velour as it is often difficult to determine if the fabric has been made with silk or synthetic fibers.
